Experienced Sudden Pain in Face

- Mr S.K, a 50-year-old

Experienced a sudden sharp pain at the side of his face, lasting only a few seconds

He dismissed the pain attack and went about his daily life as usual

Excruciating Pain In His Cheek

- The pain was isolated to his face during the first incident

A month later, he experienced another pain attack that lasted 5 minutes

Pain was excruciating and felt as if someone had taken a knife and sliced his cheeks open from his mouth to the jaw

Severe Pain Attack Occurred 3 Years Back

- The above incident occurred 3 years ago

Following the intense 5 minute pain attack, Mr S.K. went online to look for answers for his pain and how to treat it

He found out about Dr Chua and decided to book a consultation.

Diagnosed Root Cause & Treated Pain

- Last facial pain attack that Mr S.K experienced after receiving treatment was 2 years back

After accurately identifying the root cause of his pain, Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN), Dr Chua first started him off with antiepileptic medicine

Dr Chua then proposed Trigeminal Ganglion Radiofrequency Rhizotomy, a minimally invasive treatment that has one of the highest rates of complete pain relief for TN

Since the treatment, Mr S.K now goes about his life without having to fear the sudden and excruciating pain attacks that used to affect him.

How We Can Treat Your Face Pain

Still deciding if you should see a pain specialist for your pain? We address some common questions about resolving pain and what we do below. Click the various questions to find out more!

1) Will my facial pain require surgery?
Not all pain requires surgery
Surgery for facial pain tends to be quite rare. The advances in modern medicine have led to the availability of many non-surgical interventions for your facial pain. These alternatives to open surgery are seen as the "missing link" between conservative care and surgical options. In fact, some simple lifestyle changes alone can help. It should be noted that with facial pain, patience is important as it takes time to get better.

2) Will I just be prescribed medication for my pain?
Pain specialists don’t just prescribe pain medication
Most people have the common misconception that pain specialists primarily prescribe pain medications as a means for treating pain. However, that is far from the truth. SPI leverages on the latest pain diagnostic methods to accurately identify the cause of your pain, and implement appropriate procedures to treat it. Treatment options can range from physical therapy to pharmacological treatments to minimally invasive procedures.

3) When should I see a pain specialist?
Pain management isn’t the last resort
Many people think that seeing a pain specialist is the last resort. However, therapeutic interventions work best when applied early. The sooner you seek a consultation with a pain specialist, the better your pain can be managed in the long term. This is because waiting until your pain becomes chronic to see a pain specialist might result in a deterioration of your condition, affecting your ability to fully recover from your pain.
